Food and Nutrition

East Bentleigh Child Care Centre offers nutritionally balanced meal options for breakfast, morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea. All food is prepared daily in our purpose-built kitchen by our in-house cook. Our Centre aims to promote healthy eating habits and we encourage children to try a wide variety of food.

We have developed menus that provide meal options that are both nutritional and appealing to children. We offer a four week rotating menu.

Lunches are always broken down into several parts – meat/sauce, vegetables and carbohydrates. This gives the children choices in what they eat and in turn encourages them to eat the food they have chosen.

Meal Times

Meal times are a relaxed and enjoyable part of our day, and are used to develop the children’s independence, social and language skills.

Staff also sit with the children at meal times and enjoy lunch with them while discussing the food they are eating.

We understand that some children are selective about their food and that not all children will like every dish we serve. While they are encouraged to try a small amount, a platter of fruit will be available so that children have the option of a healthy alternative after the meal.

Meal times are:

  • Breakfast 7.00-8.15am
  • Morning tea from 9.00am
  • Lunch 11.00am-12.15pm
  • Afternoon tea 2.00-3.00pm
  • Light snack 5.00pm

Food Safety

The Centre follows an approved Food Safety Plan that is assessed annually by both the local Council and an independent Auditor. All food is prepared following Workplace Hygiene Procedures and Basic Food Safety Practices.

Special Dietary Needs

All food handling procedures are carried out in accordance with the Centre’s Anaphylaxis and Asthma Policy.

Our Director and Cook will consult with you to develop a plan to accommodate any dietary requirements or food intolerances.  In most cases we will be able to alter our menu, or provide a separate meal.

No food is to be brought into the Centre by children or their families. Our strict food safety guidelines are designed to manage children with a range of allergies, some of which can be life-threatening.
